The École Militaire is a prestigious higher military education institution, founded in 1751 by Louis XV. Designed by royal architect Ange-Jacques Gabriel, this impressive complex is still active today. It marks the southeastern end of the Champ-de-Mars, the former site of annual troop reviews before they moved to the Champs-Élysées.From 1876 to 1993, the École Supérieure de Guerre trained staff officers and generals there. Renamed Collège Interarmées de Défense in 1993 and then École de Guerre in 2011, it’s still based on site. The Saint-Louis Chapel, dedicated to the patron saint of the armies and designed by Gabriel, nestles inside the château. Napoleon Bonaparte was a student there and received his confirmation in it. Damaged during the Revolution, it was long used as a clothing depot or ballroom (for Napoleon’s coronation anniversary), before being returned to worship in 1952.
